The Saxon Textile Research Institute examines manifold applications of technical textiles. For more than 25 years, it has acted as a partner for innovations and as a service-provider for its customers world-wide. In this regard, textile lightweight engineering, with all its facets, has increasingly moved into the focus of research at STFI. From the development of textile semi-finished products and the formation of new and partly hybrid material composites, to recycling and reuse – the STFI considers the entire value chain. In addition to the research of new materials and processes, the development of suitable testing methods and complex assessment criteria has been in the focus of their testing and certification body activities too.
Within the framework of the RecyCarb research project, the STFI has demonstrated a qualified value chain for nonwovens made of recycled carbon fibres. Its functional and sustainable usability in complex fibre composites in the automotive or aviation industry, and in the areas of sports equipment or medical engineering, has been proven. This is shown by the demonstrators that have been produced, for example, bicycle saddles, CT benches or interieur parts in the automotive industry. At the same time, a monitoring system in conformance with the standards has been developed to assess the quality of finished recycled material, as well as an in-process monitoring system that is based on this and that is up to the state of the art of the 4th industrial revolution.
