ILEK – Institut für Leichtbau Entwerfen und Konstruieren

Following an interdisciplinary and cross-material approach, the Institute for Lightweight Structures and Conceptual Design focuses on the development of light, resource efficient skins and structures. One of the institute’s traditional research fields is the development of fiber and foil-based façade systems.

The research on adaptive skins and structures within the CRC 1244 represents a special focus. Whereas conventional façade systems express a limited reaction to outside influences, the implementation of active components with sensors and actuators can create new possibilities regarding building adaptivity to varying outside conditions and environmental settings. Thereby the overall objective is reducing material and energy consumption to a minimum, while concurrently improving user comfort.

Adaptive membrane façade modules

Based on the previous research activities of the ILEK in the field of system and profile design of multi-layer, textile building envelopes as well as active sound and acoustic insulation, the research project “Development of adaptive membrane façade modules” (funded by the ZukunftBAU Initiative) is the first to implement an adaptive, multi-functional, textile façade element on a scale of 1:1. This will be monitored intensively under real weather conditions at the demonstrator high-rise of the CRC 1244 in order to prove the usability of such cladding systems even under real requirements.
